Origin (1/4)

Zhōngguó shūfǎ de lìshǐ kě zhuīsù zhì 4000 nián qián, kěshì méiyǒu rén néng quèdìng shénme shíhou zhōngguó wénzì chūxiàn. Chuánshuō huángdì cāngxié fāmíngliǎo zhōngguó wénzì.

Chinese calligraphy history can be traced back to 4000 years ago, but no one can determine exactly when the Chinese text was first discovered. Legend says that the Yellow Emperor Cangjie invented Chinese characters.

Origin (continued) (2/4)

Zuì zǎoqí wénzì shì jiǎgǔwén, kěshì cóng yǔ wénzì xué de guāndiǎn, jiǎgǔwén bùshì quán chéngshú de shūmiàn xíngshì. Jiǎgǔwén shì zhōngguó shūfǎ yìshù de zhǔyào fēnggé. Yào chéngwéi yīgè zhōngguó shūfǎ de zhuānjiā xūyào yǒu nàixīn de yīgè yīgè de liànxí bǐhuà. Jiù xiàng yào xué qìgōng, yào xué shūfǎ xūyào huā hěnduō shíjiān.

Oracle Bone Inscription (Jia Gu Wen) was considered one of the earliest Chinese characters that have been discovered, but to linguistics, Jia Gu Wen was not yet a fully mature written form of language. However, it is still considered a major style of Chinese calligraphy. In order to become an expert in Chinese calligraphy, one must spend countless hours practicing stroke by stroke. Just like Chinese Qi Gong, it takes time and patience to master it.

[Huángtíngjiān] (1045-1105)

Song Dynasty (960-1279)

The poem translates as, "Flowers’ fragrance incenses one to break meditation; Even one in a frame of mind past middle years. Poetic thoughts come in spring not unlike the rowing of a boatman against the stream."

[Chénzhōu] (1427-1509)

Ming Dynasty (1368-1644)

Shen Zhou's friend, Zhao Mingyu, was old but did not have a beard. When another friend Yao Cundao heard of it, he asked Zhou Zongdao (who had a full beard) to help by giving him ten whiskers. Shen Zhou lent his support with this handscroll done in large running script.

Past and Present Implications

Gǔ shíhou de zhōngguó zì xiàng túhuà de yàngzi. Guòle hǎojǐ nián, rénjiā jiù màn man de gǎibiàn zìtǐ chéngwéi hànzì. Suǒyǐ xuéxí fántǐ zì bǐ xuéxí jiǎntǐzì hái róngyì, yīnwèi nǐ kěyǐ kàn túpiàn biànchéng fántǐ zì. Rúguǒ nǐ bù dǒng fántǐ zì, nǐ jiù wúfǎ liǎojiě gǔ shíhou de xiàngxíng wénzì.

Along time ago, Chinese characters were presented as pictographs. After many years, people slowly changed the form of the language into the Han Zi we have today. Learning traditional characters is easier than learning simplified because the traditional characters are more similar to pictographs.

Similar Art Forms in Other Cultures

Zhōngguó shūfǎ de dì yī pī zuòpǐn bùshì wénzì, ér shì yīxiē kèhuà fúhào (xiàngxíng wénzì huò túhuà wénzì). Zhèyàng de zuòpǐn gēn gǔlǎo de āijí hěn xiàng.

The first batch of Chinese characters was actually pictographs, similarly to Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphics.

Self Reflections

Emily Lin:

Vivian Yu:

Questions
