An Exhibition of Australian Children’s Book Illustration
Hello from Australia! is an annual exhibition that celebrates Australian children’s book illustration at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. It’s an initiative of the Australian Publishers Association in partnership with Books Illustrated, funded by the Copyright Agency.
Our aim is to support publishers in the promotion and sale of rights to Australian children’s books and to facilitate contact between Australian publishers and international agents and promoters. In broader terms, we aim to promote Australian culture and literary culture internationally, and draw attention to and showcase the diversity and depth of Australian children’s books.
After the Bologna Book Fair each year Hello from Australia! tours to other book festivals and fairs. In 2011 the exhibition toured to Paju Bookcity in South Korea. In 2012 the exhibition toured again Paju Bookcity for the Booksori Festival and on to the National Youth and Children’s Library, in Seoul.
In 2013 it was first exhibited at the Korea Foundation Cultural Gallery and then at the inaugural International Illustration Concours on Nami Island. It is currently touring to many library venues throughout South Korea. In 2013 the exhibition was shown at the Capital Library Beijing, China, as part of Australian Writers’ Week.
The Australian Publishers Association is the peak industry body for Australian book, journal and electronic publishers. Established in 1948, the Association is an advocate for all Australian publishers: large or small; commercial or non-profit; academic or popular; locally or overseas owned. www.publishers.asn.au
Books Illustrated is a privately run gallery in Melbourne, Australia and specialises in promoting Australian book illustration and illus-trators through exhibitions shown nationally and internationally. www.booksillustrated.com.au

When Mothball discovers a new hole, it unexpectedly leads her to the local school. The children learn that wombats love carrots and grass, while Mothball learns that lunch boxes contain very few carrots, that sports sheds can be a good place to have a nap, and that when you’re brown and round, it’s not a good idea to get too close to a ball ...

The Australian Children’s Laureate: Enriching the lives of young Australians through the power of story.
Since 2011, respected Australian children’s authors or illustrators have been awarded this prestigious honour for an outstanding contribution to children’s literature. They act as national
and international ambassadors for reading.
Jackie French, best-selling author of over 140 books, including the iconic Diary of a Wombat and Hitler’s Daughter, is the Australian Children’s Laureate for 2014 – 2015.
Jackie French has written over 140 fiction and non-fiction books. Her writing career spans 25 years and includes 248 wombats, 3,721 bush rats, 36 languages and over 60 awards in Australia and overseas. She is passionate about history, the environment and the conservation of wildlife and our planet. Jackie is also dyslexic, and is a strong advocate for the rights of children with learning difficulties.
The theme for French’s two-year term as Australian Children’s Laureate will be ‘Share a Story’.
‘There are a million ways to share a story,’ Jackie said. ‘To read to a child on your lap; to have a child read to you while you cook dinner; to read to the dog when it has to go to the vet to calm it (or you!) down; to join a storytell-ing session at your library. You can also tell your grandchildren what life was like when you were young over the phone or Skype or read to thousands of people via video conferencing.’
